Best Development Competition

Image

Due to constrictions of finance and other reasons the Best Development Competition will now be bi-annual.

The next competition will be in 2011 when leaflets will be produced and mailed.

The aim of this competition, which was established in 1990 is to recognise and promise good building design. The competition is open to new and converted buildings, including extensions of any size or character in the southern part of Mole Valley District (i.e. from Mickleham southwards) that are fully completed between 1st April and 31st March.

Anybody may nominate a development for an award. Nominations should be addressed to the competition organiser whose details are given below. Ideally the developments can easily be admired without going onto private property.

The competition is divided into two sections, a large category and a small category. Developments larger than an average sized four bedroom house will be eligible for the large category, everything else will fall into the small category. There is also now an Heritage Conservation Award.

The judges take into account many factors including:

  • Relationship of the development to its surroundings
  • Imaginative and efficient use of the site
  • The contribution the Development makes to enhancing the appearance of the locality
  • Sensitive and interesting use of good quality materials
  • Good detailing and workmanship
  • Access and parking arrangements with particular reference to access for the disabled
  • Quality of any landscaping.

The Awards

There is a cup for each category which, if awarded, is to be held for two years. Often developments are judged to be 'Highly Commended' or 'Commended'. All recipients of awards will receive a framed certificate to keep.

Watch this space in January 2011 for more details.
